How to create smart goals that actually fit you

Are you struggling with being consistent with your goals? How to stick to the set of goals you chose? Do you have a set of smart objectives? Or is your goal setting not so smart? Have you set some goals in the past only to forget about them in the later days, due to lack of motivation, self-consciousness, laziness or Netflix?

We all have been there. No. All of us are in that boat, constantly. It’s the boat of life. To struggle and to overcome our laziness of not wanting to do anything, and then criticize ourselves and be ashamed of our not-accomplished-goals. It sucks.

It’s a never-ending battle. Even when we are not really battling, and actually just thinking about the battle.

Looking for Smart Goal Tips on How to Become a Millionaire? That is the problem, right there!

I have talked about this illusion that we’ve all been put to dream about in this post. We don’t really want to be millionaires. Not really. Who wants to work and work and then work again?

Nope. We only want the good stuff.

That’s what we all think there is to it anyway. This is what they sell us. We think that our life will magically be better if we become millionaires, that then we won’t have to face life’s problems anymore because there will be no problems to deal with, that everything will be just how we want it because we have the money for it.

When in reality, we will still have our problems, and possibly, bigger ones. Because, you see, life’s all about fixing problems that come your way. Life is all about this. If you don’t have anything to do, you’ll just become useless. Ultimately lifeless, bored. Just like Buddha was, right before he quit that life and then reached enlightenment.

The best example of feeling useless, with nowhere to go, places to be, things to do and, is the Coronavirus situation. You can’t go anywhere, can’t do anything, you must sit at home and do nothing. This was felt by everyone so we can all agree on that, since we all felt its consequences pretty much equally.

When you have things to do, you live. However, when you don’t have things to do, things to solve, you become lifeless. Nothing satisfies you. This is what slowly dying looks like. Knowlea

The Ultimate Smart Goal Setting is to Create Real and Tangible Goals

After reading Mark Manson’s book, about how to say fu** it to everything, I realised once again that we all live in some kind of numbing bubbles. We don’t see life as it is. It’s exactly how Orwell said (and Manson cited in his book), that it’s really damn hard to see what’s beneath our noses.

You need to be setting real tangible personal goals, smart goals, smart objectives that actually fit YOU and YOUR reality. Don’t think about years ahead of time, 10 years ahead or something like that, when you will have that money for that business, then you will succeed in life and be fully happy. Because that is living in dreamland.

You don’t control what will happen in your life. Especially in 10 years. Unfortunately we can’t predict the future. So don’t pretend like you can with those goals that are more like unrealistic hypothetical ideas.

And also, just remember this: how can you be setting goals that far ahead in time, when then comes Corona to break all our plans? That is why we need to be more real about our goals. Life comes breaking into our houses without knocking when we are busy making plans for years to come.

We forget about this, but that is what life is all about. I repeat, we can’t predict the future. Sorry to remind us all off that sad reality.

If you want to be achieving goals, you need to actually make tangible goals. Things you can do, everyday. Step by step. A tangible “road to success”.

Have you heard about the SMART Marketing Objectives?

In marketing there is this specific SMART goal setting technique that marketeers use: the SMART marketing goals. However, although they are used in marketing, they should be used in every aspect of life, as it really is a smart way of setting up our goals in the right track. Google it. It’s everywhere. So here are the SMART marketing objectives:

  • Specific – What is it that you want to accomplish specifically? Can you write it in a few words?
  • Measurable – How can you measure the moment when you’ve reached the goal? Is it measurable?
  • Achievable – Is the goal doable? It can’t be dreamlike
  • Realistic – Can you really accomplish your goal in real life? Do you have the means to accomplish it?
  • In Time – What is the set time, the due date for the goal? Establish when or until when do you want to accomplish it.

One of the key features here is the last one – time. This is the one that we generally skip completely. Yet is absolutely crucial.

Think about your own personal goals

Don’t appropriate other people’s dreams and pretend them to be your own. I have encountered so many people that adopt other people’s dreams and visions instead of forming their own. Because they believe in the opinion of the group, to make them feel accepted and appreciated. As they haven’t spent enough time trying to understand who they are, what they like.

Everybody knows that we can’t all be doctors, lawyers, professors, scientists, techies, IT mega starts. Not everybody can be goal setting to become a millionaire. For instance, who would build our roads? Or who would drive our taxis? Or who would deliver your mail to your house? And who would restock your food on the supermarket shelves? You get the idea.

People have different skills and personalities, and we should adopt our lives according to them, instead of fixating on others people’s lives and what media tells us is right or wrong, at this age or at that age.

So I urge you to sit in a dark room, and just introspect on your life. What is it that you really want to accomplish? Forget society, forget your parents, forget your school friends. Pretend that you go to a foreign country alone. Nobody knows you. You don’t know anyone either. What would you like to do if you would have a fresh start there?

Lastly – What will it be? Easy way out or …?

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. Will Durant, Philosopher and Historian

Generally one of the key things we need to do to accomplish a set goal is to have the resilience to put in the work. Being it starting to do exercise, starting a business, writing songs, starting fishing, engaging in a new hobby. Anything that we might set our minds to, has always to do with persistence, consistency, resilience to keep doing it even when there is lack o motivation, so also, discipline is important.

Persistency, consistency, resilience, discipline. These are the things that will keep you going through what you have set your mind to.

And these are utmost important things, as they are all connected to the TIME aspect of life. Everything we do is done within the spectrum of time.

So, the more TIME you spend doing something, the closer you’ll be to your goal.

The key to achieving your goals is then linked to the discipline, consistency, resilience, persistency or stubbornness (vs laziness and the easy way out) you have to chase that goal.

To keep in mind for later reference (psst! Write on your smartphone notepad if you want)

  • Be real with yourself. You’re can’t lie to yourself. Accept your difficulties when creating your goals.
  • Create realistic goals that fit you.
  • Create goals that are tangible, concrete.
  • Create SMART goals (and feel smart about it)
  • Create smart goals for the next few months. Not years. (you never know what’s coming)
  • Don’t chase other people’s dreams. Create your own dreams.
  • We are what we repeatedly do. Not say.
  • Compromise with yourself. At the end of the day, that is what matters. How much you can stick to your own word with yourself, not anybody else.
  • Persistency, consistency, resilience, discipline vs easy way out and laziness

Stay healthy and curious! Cheers!
